Despite Jack Zoellner’s first-inning grand slam, the Eau Claire Express fell to the Mankato  MoonDogs 8-6 on Sunday in Northwoods League action at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, Minn. It was the second consecutive loss for the Express, who had won seven in a row prior to arriving in Mankato for a two-game series.

Zoellner’s blast, his second home run of the season, helped stake the Express to a 5-0 lead after one inning.

But the MoonDogs got four runs back in the second, highlighted by Tyler Sullivan’s two-run single. Eric Schenck-Joblinske tied the score at 5 with a solo homer in the third. Craig Lepre’s RBI fielder’s choice in the fifth gave Mankato the lead, and the MoonDogs added insurance runs in the eighth on Peter Maris’ single and Brinn Bell’s sacrifice fly.

Mike Porcaro drove in a run in the ninth for the Express, who had the tying run at the plate when the game ended.

Eau Claire starter Ian Doughty pitched into the second inning but didn’t record an out. He gave up four runs on two hits, two walks and three hit batters in one inning. He struck out one.
