The Colfax and Eleva-Strum girls basketball teams received No. 1 seeds in the WIAA playoff brackets released Sunday.
Colfax, ranked 10th in the state, got the top seed in its half of Division 4’s sectional No. 1. The Vikings will have a first round bye, and face either No. 8 Glenwood City or No. 9 Grantsburg in their postseason opener.
In Division 5, Eleva-Strum received the top seed in its half of the sectional. The Cardinals host No. 16 Plum City/Elmwood in the opening round. Independence received the No. 2 seed in that part of the bracket.
Menomonie received a No. 2 seed in Division 2, and will play host to the winner of the No. 7 Holmen vs. No. 10 Rice Lake regional quarterfinal.
In Division 1, Chippewa Falls received the highest seed of any local team. The Cardinals got the No. 4 spot, and host No. 13 Oshkosh West in their playoff opener.
Also in that sectional, Eau Claire Memorial received the No. 11 seed and travels to Oshkosh to take on sixth-seeded Oshkosh North in its first game of the postseason. No. 17 Eau Claire North takes on No. 16 Superior in Superior on February 19, with the winner advancing to play top-seeded Kimberly.
In Division 3, Heart O’ North Conference champion Bloomer is the No. 3 seed in its half of the sectional. The Blackhawks have a first-round bye and face either No. 6 Baldwin-Woodville or No. 11 Ellsworth in their opener.
Elk Mound got the No. 5 seed in the bottom half of that sectional and will host No. 12 Viroqua to open the playoffs. Seventh-seeded Altoona hosts No. 10 Black River Falls in its first game.
The bottom half of Division 4’s sectional No. 2 figures to be a tough battle. Melrose-Mindoro, ranked third in the state, is the top seed. Dunn-St. Croix Conference contender and ninth-ranked Durand received the No. 2 seed, and Western Cloverbelt Conference champion Regis is the No. 3 seed.
Durand gets the winner of the opening round matchup between No. 7 Mondovi and No. 10 Stanley-Boyd in its opener, while Regis faces either No. 6 Cochrane-Fountain City or No. 11 Spring Valley.
Fourth-seeded Osseo-Fairchild is also in that sectional, and faces either No. 5 Fall Creek or No. 12 Whitehall after a bye. Eighth-seeded Augusta hosts ninth-seeded Cadott in the first round.
11th-seeded Chetek-Weyerhaeuser is in Colfax’s side of the bracket, and faces No. 6 Boyceville in the regional quarterfinals.
In Division 5, McDonell received a No. 5 seed and hosts No. 12 Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran in the first round. Also in that half of the sectional, 10th-seeded Thorp travels to take on No. 7 Flambeau in the opening round.
