Eau Claire Memorial sophomore righthander Vince Trapani has accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Arkansas, he announced over the weekend.
Trapani, 16, has had a highly-successful national and even international career as a youth pitcher the past several years playing for the GRB team out of Madison. That was a connection to his decision as Matt Hobbs, who worked with Trapani in his youth years, has taken the pitcher’s coach position at Arkansas under veteran head coach Dave Van Horn.
Hobbs has a good track record working with pitchers and their development, Trapani said.
“I attended a camp at Arkansas and was offered a scholarship last summer,” Trapani said. “The atmosphere there is fantastic, there is nothing like it around.”
As a freshman at Memorial last spring, the 6-1, 200-pounder posted a 3-0 record and 1.12 ERA with 36 strikeouts and 11 walks in 25 innings. He pitched a one-hit, perfect game in that the runner that got the hit was thrown out at third base. No other batters reached base.
Trapani is currently a member of the Old Abe basketball team.
