Blugolds earn honors
UW-Eau Claire’s Marcus Weaver and Megan Wallace were named Midwest Region Field Athletes of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Thursday.
Weaver is ranked first nationally in the decathlon at 7273, a total that puts him among the top-10 in NCAA Division III history. He’s also ranked second nationally in the javelin. Wallace is the DIII record holder in the heptathlon with a total of 5471. She’s ranked eighth nationally in the javelin and 11th in the long jump.
Van Krevelen steps down
UW-Eau Claire gymnastics head coach Danielle Van Krevelen has stepped down after four seasons with the Blugolds, the school announced Thursday.
Van Krevelen, a former Blugold gymnast herself, coached Kiya Borge to a national runner-up finish in the floor exercise at the 2018-19 National College Gymnastics Association Championships and helped Tori Erickson earn National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women Division III Gymnast of the Year a season prior.
“As much as I love coaching, now is the time for me to focus on my family,” Van Krevelen said in a statement. “I will always cherish the memories and lifelong friends I have from my experiences as a Blugold gymnast and coach.”
UWEC coach makes HOF
UW-Eau Claire throws coach Paul Conlin was inducted into the NCAA Division III Track & Field Athletic Hall of Fame on Wednesday night.
Conlin was a three-time NCAA shot put champion, a five-time All-American and four-time WIAC Champion at UW-Platteville. As a Blugold coach, Conlin’s throwers have combined for 10 national titles, 10 NCAA runner-up finishes and 47 All-American honors.
WIAA’s Labecki retiring
WIAA Deputy Director Wade Labecki announced his retirement on Thursday, effective Aug. 31.
Labecki has been deputy director since July 1, 2009. He has been in charge of student-athlete eligibility, interpretation of association rules, tournament planning and committee leadership in football, wrestling and baseball.
